From a medical standpoint, PCP acts primarily as an NMDA receptor antagonist, disrupting normal glutamate signaling in the brain. This leads to dissociation, altered perception, and analgesia, but also to impaired cognition and potentially dangerous behavioral effects. It also interacts with dopaminergic, serotonergic, and adrenergic systems, which contributes to its complex clinical presentation. From a medical standpoint, PCP acts primarily as an NMDA receptor
antagonist, disrupting normal glutamate signaling in the brain. This leads
to dissociation, altered perception, and analgesia, but also to impaired
cognition and potentially dangerous behavioral effects. It also interacts
with dopaminergic, serotonergic, and adrenergic systems, which contributes
to its complex clinical presentation.
There is no legitimate outpatient prescription or dosing regimen for PCP.
Any exposure is considered toxicological. When patients present after use,
management is supportive and focused on stabilization. In emergency
settings, clinicians monitor airway, breathing, and circulation, control
agitation with appropriate sedatives, and manage complications such as
hyperthermia or hypertension.
Common adverse effects include confusion, disorientation, nystagmus
(involuntary eye movements), slurred speech, loss of coordination, and numbness. At higher levels, individuals may develop severe agitation, hallucinations, paranoia, violent behavior, or psychosis. Physiological
effects can include elevated blood pressure, rapid heart rate, respiratory
depression, and hyperthermia. In extreme cases, PCP poisoning can lead
to seizures, rhabdomyolysis, coma, or death.
Chronic use is associated with persistent cognitive impairment, mood
disorders, memory deficits, and long-lasting psychotic symptoms. Repeated
exposure can worsen underlying mental health conditions and increase the
risk of injury due to impaired judgment and perception.
Regarding misuse, PCP is taken non-medically for its dissociative and
hallucinogenic effects. It is commonly found as a powder, liquid, or
applied to plant material for smoking. Because potency is unpredictable,
users are at high risk of overdose and severe behavioral toxicity.
